“Hello,” he said, standing close enough he could see three different shades of gray in her soulful eyes. “Are you in town for the rodeo?” The question sounded stupid even as the words left his mouth. About ninety-five percent of the people in Pendleton were there for the rodeo.

“Isn’t everyone?” the girl asked with a shy smile.

He caught a second whiff of her fragrance that made him think of summer roses in bloom. Based on her attire and her fragrance, he was getting the idea she might have a thing for roses.

“I’m Baylor Birke,” he said, not yet ready to relinquish his hold on her or step back. Baylor noticed the woman was neither short nor tall, but as she stood with the toes of her boots nearly touching his, he concluded she was just right. Desperately, he wanted to touch her rosy cheek to see if it would feel as smooth as it looked, or twine one of those wispy tendrils framing her sweet face around his finger.

Before he could act on any of his unanticipated impulses, the woman moved out of his grasp. However, she held out a hand that Baylor was more than happy to shake. The moment his hand connected with hers, though, a jolt traveled up his arm that went straight to his head, leaving him feeling like his brain had been scrambled.

“Bonnie McClure,” she said, then quickly released his hand and took another step back. “You made the silver pieces?”

Baylor nodded. “Yep. May I show some of them to you?”

“I would …” She glanced toward the entrance, then shook her head. “I can’t stay. It was nice to meet you, Mr. Birke. You do beautiful work. I wish you all the best with your endeavors.”

Before he could find a reason to further delay her, she stepped around him and rushed toward the door, carried along in the crowd. In the time it took him to step outside, she’d been swallowed by the throngs of people milling around on the sidewalk.

Baylor felt as though someone significant had just walked out of his life.
