Buttercream Frosting

A few weeks ago, my mom and dad celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. I asked my dad what flavor of cake they’d like, and he chose plain ol’ vanilla.

I decided I’d decorate the cake using some new frosting tips I bought a while back and haven’t had the opportunity to experiment with.

The tips work best with buttercream frosting. The frosting and the flowers turned out so well, I thought I’d share both with you today!  Mom and Dad were surprised by the cake and two of my nieces asked for the frosting recipe.

The ingredients couldn’t get much simpler: butter, powdered sugar, cream, and vanilla extract. That’s it!

Start by whipping the butter until it’s light and fluffy.

Mix in the remaining ingredients until the frosting is thick and temptingly delicious. You can just frost your cake with it and be ridiculously glad you did. Or you can frost your cake and then decorate it, too!

Here’s where the fun really gets started! The tips I used are called Russian Piping Tips. Each tip is huge and when you squeeze out the frosting, it forms the whole flower, not just a petal (the coolest thing, ever!). So even if you have no idea what you’re doing when it comes to cake decorating (like moi), you can look like you do. The tips come with plenty of helpful instructions as well as links to videos you can watch if you need a little help getting the hang of it.

I chose the tulip tip, tinted the frosting pink (Mom and Dad’s wedding color), and started decorating.

Start to finish, it only took about twenty minutes to make the flowers (I almost giggled when someone asked how many hours I spent decorating the cake!).

Just because I’m weird and wanted a little contrast to all the pink, I added a few green leaves with a traditional-style tip.

I highly recommend these frosting tips and will definitely use them again the next time I need to “fancy” up a cake or cupcakes!  If you’d like to enter to win a set, keep reading to the bottom of this post.
