Raising funds and awareness for the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund

Read a Book, Help a Cowboy!

JCCF_2017 REVISED 10-04-17.jpgNovember 1 through December 24,  ten percent of the net proceeds from all my book sales are donated to the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund.

The JCCF is a non-profit organization that assists rodeo athletes who’ve sustained catastrophic injuries and are unable to work for an extended period. Every book purchased during this promotional period adds to the donation total. Don’t forget to include books on your Christmas lists!

Back in 2013, I was researching details for The Christmas Cowboy, the first book in the Rodeo Romance series. I wanted to know how much medical care an injured cowboy would receive at a rodeo versus going to the hospital.

In the story, the hero is a saddle bronc rider named Tate who sustains an injury at a rodeo. In an attempt to get my facts straight for the story, I reached out to the Justin Sportsmedicine Team®. Through mobile medical centers, they provide care at more than 125 PRCA rodeos annually. Their responses to my questions were extremely helpful and I was so impressed with them, I wanted to do a little something in return.

So I launched a campaign to donate a portion of my book sales to the JCCF during the month of December.

Two years ago, I added the month of November to my promotion, giving two months to raise funds for JCCF.

If you enjoy rodeos and the cowboys who make them possible (or reading about them in books), I hope you’ll take a look at the JCCF. It’s a great organization that really does make a difference when these cowboys are injured.

You can find my books at:

Amazon | Amazon UK | Barnes & Noble | Smashwords | Apple | Audible

Be sure to come to the party planned Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Pacific Time) to kick off the campaign. Great prizes, giveaways, freebies, guest authors and more – so don’t miss out!

I promised to share some photos of the Westward Ho Parade in Pendleton, and here they are!

a troops

These four started off the parade. Loved their uniforms and how seriously they took their job.  They were also at the rodeo on Saturday during the opening ceremony.

a grand marshal 1

This is the parade Grand Marshal. The fun thing is that my daddy worked for his dad way back in the 1950s when my mom and dad were newly married.

a mounted band

The mounted band is always such fun. I so admire people who can do two things at once… like ride a horse and play an instrument. Not everyone can say they play a tuba while riding a horse.

a bevy of court

Miss Rodeo members from various states chose to ride in a wagon with their chaps on display. It was fun to see them, full of smiles for the crowd.

a wagon 1

The team of horses was impressive, but this wagon… the woodwork on it was gorgeous and my photo does not do it justice. Seriously, it was absolutely beautiful!

a longhorns 2

So… if you don’t have a horse, just go ahead and ride a longhorn.

a longhorns

Legendary Longhorns have been participating in the parade the last few years. They also take their animals to the park (where a bunch of vendors are set up) and people can get a  photo sitting on one of the longhorns. It’s always fun to see them in the parade.

Mules 1

I think after writing about Steve the Mule, I now have a thing for mules. So enjoyed seeing this team.

As for the bloopers, here are a few of my favorites…

blooper 1

blooper 2

blooper 1

a bulldogger

This poor guy slid I can’t tell you how far in the grass. Glad I’m not the one having to get the stains out of his jeans.

blooper 3

This cowboy missed his mark and landed in front of the steer. And the steer didn’t slow down, just ran right over him.

blooper 4

And this one missed bulldogging his steer, too. As thanks, the steer stomped on his leg.

If you have any fun captions for these photos, please feel free to share in the comments!

Joy is…

a great rodeo

BB f1

Captain Cavedweller and I spent the weekend at the Pendleton Round-Up.  It’s something we look forward to attending all year.  I have a lot of fun just snapping photos during the rodeo, so I’m sharing some of my favorites with you today.

BAREBACK

BB1

Swan Lake starts to play in my head when I look at this photo.

BB f17 2

Liked the colors in this one… of his shirt, boots and the horse.

BB3

Eye-catching colors…

BB2

And the dust softening the image.

INDIAN RELAY RACE

A Indian Relay

The Indian Relay Race hearkens back to the early days of the Round-Up and is still an action-packed event. Teams race around the big track to win the title of this event. Each rider switches horses three times. And some of these horses act is though they’ve barely ever seen humans let alone been ridden before. Oh, and did I mention they ride bareback? At Saturday’s championship race, one of the horses got away and started racing in the opposite direction around the track. Made for some exciting moments for the spectators as well as the racers.

CALF ROPING

calf roper 1

This is my favorite of all the calf roping photos I took. I love the look on his face and the way the rope is floating above the calf.

SADDLE BRONC

bronc S2

Saddle Bronc is probably my favorite event.

Bronc F17 2

Why, you ask?

Bronc s1

There’s the fact The Christmas Cowboy hero is a saddle bronc rider and it’s what started me out on the Rodeo Romance series of my books.

Also, these guys ride with a certain grace and panache…

Cort 2

And we love cheering for this guy – Cort Scheer. I met his sweet mama and sister years ago in Las Vegas and enjoy staying in touch with them.

dismount in crowd

This is one of my favorite photos from the rodeo this year. The rider made his eight second ride (which took him into the crowd of cowboys watching on the grass). He dismounted and landed on his feet right there to receive a bunch of hearty slaps on the back from his peers while the horse caused a bunch of last-minute scrambling. (Note the one cowboy who’s got a death grip on the back of a photographer’s vest in the lower left corner). Oh, and Cort is the one laughing and cheering right by the horse. So fun!

B pickup men

I don’t think these guys get enough credit for what they do, but the Pickup men are awesome.

BULLDOGGING

bulldogger 1

I didn’t get a lot of fabulous Bulldogging photos, but I liked this one because you see so much action in it.

BULLRIDING

bullriderF17 1

This bull has a rather devilish look to him. I don’t think the tongue out and flying snot is helping any.

bullrider F17 2

Kickin’ up dust…

bull 1

It’s challenging for me to get good bull riding shots because the bulls stay so close to the chutes.

a bullfighters.jpg

The bull fighters did a fantastic job at the rodeo. Dusty Tuckness is a crowd favorite and Tim  O’Connor was fabulous, too.

clown 1

If any of you read Barreling Through Christmas, above is a barrel and the rodeo clown just happens to be inside it at this particular moment.

Enjoy the photos today? If so, I’ll share some of the parade and a few “blooper” photos tomorrow!

New Releases

To kick off the second annual Cowboys and Christmas Blog Tour and the JCCF campaign, two brand new holiday romances will release Nov. 12!

Capturing Christmas CoverCapturing Christmas is the third installment in the sweet holiday western Rodeo Romance series.

Life is hectic on a good day for rodeo stock contractor Kash Kressley. Between dodging flying hooves and babying cranky bulls, he barely has time to sleep. The last thing Kash needs is the entanglement of a sweet romance, especially with a woman as full of fire and sass as the redheaded photographer he rescues at a rodeo.

Determined to capture the best images possible, rodeo photographer Celia McGraw is fearless and feisty. Not one to back down from a challenge, her biggest risk isn’t in her work. Danger lurks in the way her heart responds to one incredibly handsome stock contractor. Will Kash and Celia capture the spirit of the season?

“Someone like you should be smart enough to know better than to do something that stupid, Miss McGraw.” The man frowned at her as he held her across his lap, riding over to the fence, out of the way of the horses and the men on horseback behind them.

Too stunned to reply, Celia gulped and continued staring at him, gradually comprehending she hadn’t been killed.

At least she assumed she hadn’t died, unless angels wore dusty cowboy hats, dark blue chaps, and were breath-stealing handsome.

Those engaging eyes bore into hers, making her heart skitter in her chest while an entire bushel of butterflies burst into flight in her stomach.

She observed her rescuer. He sat tall in the saddle and had muscles to spare, or so she presumed from the way he easily hoisted her off the ground and onto his horse. A hint of light brown hair peeked out from beneath the brim of his hat. The pale blue shirt he wore almost matched the fascinating shade of his eyes.

Celia experienced the most unreasonable urge to run her fingers along the stubbly expanse of his cheeks, down his square jaw, and over his strong chin. Mesmerized by his full bottom lip, she inhaled a deep breath and nearly choked.

The very scent of him hinted at a lethal combination of freshly fallen snow, a warm winter fire, and sweet seduction rolled into one incredibly enticing package.

The Christmas Vow CoverThe Christmas Vow is the fourth book in the Hardman Holidays sweet Victorian romance series.

Columbia River Pilot Adam Guthry returns to his hometown of Hardman, Oregon, after the sudden death of his best friend. Emotions he can’t contain bubble to the surface the moment he sees the girl who shattered his heart eleven years ago.

Widow Tia Devereux escapes her restrictive life in Portland, returning to the home she knew and adored as a girl in Hardman. She and her four-year-old son, Toby, settle into the small Eastern Oregon community, eager for the holiday season. Unfortunately, the only man she’s ever loved shows up, stirring the embers of a long-dead romance into a blazing flame. When her former father-in-law, a corrupt judge, decides he wants to raise Toby, Adam may be the only hope she has of keeping her son.

You can pre-order your copy today for only $2.99! http://amzn.to/1KQHhvI

Christmas Vow 2

Teaser

No. Her fear was for the big, loveable lunk who’d scared her half witless when she saw him tumble off the roof.

“I believe that’s exactly the point.” Adam’s lopsided grin revealed his dimples and made her mouth water for want of his kiss.

Aggravated with herself, Tia aimed her fury at Adam. “The point is your recklessness might get you or someone else horribly injured.” She turned around and strode toward the kitchen door. “I insist you…”

A snowball caught her square in the back. Mouth hanging open in surprise, she spun around and glared at him.

Adam worked to form another snowball, ignoring her scowl.

Incensed, Tia surrendered to the need to stamp her foot. “How dare you!”

“Just like this.” He grinned and lobbed another snowball at her, catching her on the shoulder. Bits of snow sprayed into her face and hair.

“Oh! You are in for it now, Adam Guthry!” Tia bent down and hastily formed a snowball. With unmistakable precision, she threw it at Adam, hitting him on the chin.

He spluttered and returned fire, barely grazing her arm as she twisted away at the last second.

Peals of her laughter filled the quiet December afternoon and drew Toby outside as she and Adam continued to throw snow at each other.

“Mama?” The little boy’s lip quivered. “Did you send me inside so you could play without me?”

Although you should be glad you can’t see it, I’m dancing around my office this morning. It’s Lacy’s release day and I’m so excited to share her with you all!

Lacy

Pendleton Petticoats Series Book 5

Lacy Cover

Sweet romance blossoms between people from two very different worlds.

Will the bonds of love be stronger than the bonds of tradition?

Eager to make her own way in the world, Lacy Williams leaves behind her family on the Umatilla Reservation and accepts a job in Pendleton at the telephone office as an operator. The work she takes in stride, but dealing with the unfamiliar, unsettling feelings stirred by the handsome banker across the street is an entirely different matter.

Grant Hill wants a wife.

However, not just any wife will do. If that were the case, he’d make an announcement at the mercantile and cause a stampede to the church. Grant wants a woman who will look beyond his material wealth and see into his heart. When he’s all but given up on the possibility that such a woman exists, he runs into the lovely Lacy Williams.

The two of them must strive to discover if the bonds of love are stronger than the bonds of tradition in this sweet historical western romance.
