A month ago, I spoke to Dad’s doctor about some concerning health issues.
When the doctor shared that Dad has diastolic heart failure on top of other medical issues, I knew things were going to have to change, especially after the doctor said the safest place for Dad to be is in assisted living.
So, we began what felt like a whirlwind of tours of properties in Dad’s area, making arrangements, ordering furniture that would help Dad be more comfortable and also fit in the limited space of an assisted living room.
We are so pleased with the facility we chose. They have been accommodating and so kind, and the residents are so friendly. I’m sure Dad will soon feel at home there.
It was so hard to leave him there and so goodbye last week, but we know it was what is safest for him, and he’s getting excellent care along with good food!
I thought you might like to see the before and after of Dad’s room. There is even a rare Captain Cavedweller sighting!
Of course, we went with a John Deere theme for his decor! Dad has quite a collection of John Deere stuff, so it was fun to pull out some pieces and use them to decorate his room.
We did order a new lift recliner, a lift bed frame and mattress, and end table, and the small drop-leaf table from a local furniture store who delivered it all just before we needed to start moving in Dad’s things.
I also ended up ordering a few things online to finish out out room.
One thing I looked at over and over was storage. I wanted to maximize storage space and useful space as much as possible.
Headboard – we chose this one because of the additional storage space and also for the charging station.
Nightstand – there isn’t a lot of room on the sides of Dad’s bed, and I liked that this was narrow, and also had a charging station.
Shower Chair – I liked that it had cross braces beneath the seat for added support and stability.
Monitor Stand – this was just the right height to work with his computer desk, and I loved that it had space to organize things like paperclips, sticky notes, pens, and more.
Shower Curtain – This shower curtain was one of the first things I ordered for Dad’s room. I loved that it had a vintage tractor on it. I didn’t love that it took forever to arrive. In fact, it came just in time for us to hang it for Dad before we headed home. But it really did make a fun addition to his bathroom.

Love this.
It’s never an easy transition, but I’m glad his seems to be smooth.
I’m sorry your dad needs more help but I’m glad you found him a great place that will take good care of him. You did an amazing job with his new place, it looks amazing!
What a wonderful transformation! I know that alone will give your dad comfort. Praying that he settles in soon and that his health issues stabilize.
Wonderful choices to make his transition easier. Praying he adjusts quickly. God bless you.
It looks fantastic! Very cozy. I hope he’ll be very happy in his new place, and I know you will sleep better knowing he’s being taken care of properly. It’s a blessing that he will use a computer, my mom is 82 and won’t touch one! We can barely get her to use a cell phone, and she won’t text, just talk. Thankfully, she lives next door to me, and my oldest daughter moved in with her to keep an eye on her.
Dad loves his computer and checking his email every day. Dad doesn’t text, but he does use his cell phone daily. So nice your Mom is next door!
You guys did a great job buying just the right things and adding all the decorations. He should be very comfortable there and hopefully meet some new friends and join activities.
Sorry his health required this move. You made his new place look so much like a home. God bless you for making the move more exciting.
That is a beautiful set up for him. I think the tractor shower curtain really made the bathroom pop. I hope he thrives in his new home and makes a lot of new friends.
It looks amazing! You did such a nice job of making it his home. I am very curious about the newspaper article on the wall, though, if you can share what it is about?
Hi Stephanie!
The newspaper article on the wall is a fun thing I did for his 95th birthday. You can upload a photo to customize it, but it basically talks about all the things that happened the year he was born. https://link.amazon/B09v9wPm9
I love this! Thank you for sharing. My mom’s 88th birthday is coming up and I’ve been stumped for a gift. I think this is the answer!
Happy birthday to your mom!
Your Dad’s new place looks so cozy! Nice job creating the John Deere theme! I suspect he will feel safe and comfortable in his new home. What a good daughter you are🥰
Hi Shanna,
I’m glad your Dad is getting settled. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done when I had to place my Mom in a care facility. She needed much more care than your Dad. I wish him much peace, and you comfort and healing at this time. It’s hard when we become our parents … parents. Both you and your husband get some well deserved rest.
It is so hard, Deborah. Sending hugs your way.
It looks like you’ve made your Dad as comfortable as possible. You’re a great daughter to a great dad! I think he will be happy there!
Great job! It looks great!
My mom, at 92, is still on the waitlist for assisted living. I hope she can do alright til then. She is so bored at her apartment with very few calls and visits. I pray she can find more enjoyment in her time of watching tv, coloring books and puzzles, etc. She really needs calls and visits, so maybe she will get that if assisted living ever opens up.
I hope you’ll be able to move her soon. That socialization each day is so important. Sending good thoughts your way!
Wow, great job. It’s a big responsibility to do what you did. Congratulations on making it feel like home…
This new living arrangement is lovely! It looks already like home in every way. You and CC have thought of everything.
God is faithful and He has His hand in your daddy.
God sure does. He opened so many doors for this to happen as quickly as it did, and we are so grateful. Thank you! Dad seems to be adjusting very well.
