Dad’s Rolodex Gift

Back in October, I happened across Rolodex art.

If you haven’t ever heard of it or seen it, Google it and prepare to be amazed at the incredible artsy things people do with Rolodex.

When I saw it, I thought, “Oh, I should do something like this for Dad for his birthday.”

So, there that was in the back of my overloaded mind as I plowed through writing five Christmas books.

Then it was Thanksgiving and thoughts of Christmas gifts (and Dad’s birthday which just so happens to be on Christmas) slammed into my head.

I ordered a brand new Rolodex, a bunch of supplies, and managed to carve out the hours it took to make the gift by getting up two hours early several mornings.

While the project turned out to look nothing like I imagined when I first envisioned doing it, it is filled with love and memories.

I treated the Rolodex like a calendar.

There’s a card for each day and one to denote each month.

Some days have inspirational or motivational words or thoughts. On Sundays, I included some of my favorite Bible verses.  I have Dad’s old journal from when he was in high school and the first year he and Mom were married. I was able to add a card to remind him of their first date and some other fun events.

Other cards were just things I remembered as I was working on the project. I hadn’t originally intended to handwrite any of this, but when it is 4 a.m. and you are running out of time to get the project done before you leave for vacation, concessions must be made!

Overall, it was a lot of work, but also a wonderful stroll down memory lane for me.

I hope it will be something Dad enjoys all year.

You don’t have to use a new Rolodex if you want to make something like this. You can use old cards and cover them wish scrapbook paper, Washi tape, stickers, or whatever tickles your fancy.

If you were making something like this, what kind of art would you use?

  1. What a neat idea! I’ve never seen anything like this, but I love it! I’m sure your dad will treasure each card.
