Fun With Words

I’ve been frantically working on editing a novel while writing the next one in the series.

Between the two projects, I spend a great deal of time on websters.com making sure the words I am using mean what I think they do or looking up alternate phrases.

It is in the thesaurus where I have way more fun than I should, especially when words and phrases pop up that no one uses any more.

Words like:

Flabbergasted

Smitten

Sticky-wicket

Graciousness

Flibbertigibbet

Giddy

Shenanigans

Brouhaha

Scoundrel

Fracas

Cabbage-Head

Daft

Suave

Dapper

Heavens to Betsy

Good Gravy

Nitwit

Make Haste

Stir Your Stivvers

Spiffy

Nifty

What old words can you add to the list?

Do you find you look for ways to incorporate fun words into your writing or everyday conversations?

Next time you need a creative boost in your writing, try looking up some old phrases or words. They might just be the inspirational spark you need. I like to visualize the characters who would use some of these words now. What would they look like? How would they sound ? Behave?

Happy Writing!
