Someone asked me the other day where I get my ideas for stories.
Honestly, most of them pop in my head quite randomly when I’m not even thinking about a story idea.
When I sit trying to come up with an idea, I might as well be chasing some exotic and rare creature that is ten-times faster than me. I will never catch it.
But if I just let my thoughts wander while I’m doing ordinary things like washing the dishes or folding the laundry or standing in line at the grocery store, the most fun ideas suddenly appear and I look like a frantic loon trying to find something to write on before I forget the storyline.
Sometimes, when you try too hard, you squelch your creativity. Ideas need room to move, to grow, to work their way to the surface and bloom.
If you’re in a creative slump, go for a walk, hang out at a mall, try making a new recipe. Do something that has nothing to do with writing and see if some fresh ideas don’t come to you.
