In the last few weeks when I was posting about my latest and greatest romance, Learnin’ The Ropes, I somehow neglected to post anything about the cover.
(In know you are all just sitting on the edge of your chairs waiting for this post.)
I wanted the cover to give a sense of what the story would be about (as we all do when we are choosing book covers). The book is a western romance, it involves a mechanic and it only seemed appropriate to include a rope.
I started by taking one of my favorite old barn-wood photos and having it blown up poster-sized.
That formed the background for the cover.
I turned the image of the wood so it was vertical and tacked it to a wall in the garage. The next step was to find a rope I could loop into a heart and hang on the wood. The final touch was to make Captain Cavedweller root around until he found a red tool box and a handful of relatively clean tools.
After I had the photo, I needed a font.
I tried several and knew I’d found just the right one when I discovered Dead Hardy (quite the name, isn’t it?).
I used the little eyedropper tool to pick up the colors in the handles of the screwdrivers for the title.
Putting it all together, it looks like this:
