I remember being in fifth grade and sitting in rapt wonder as our teacher read us Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh by Robert C. O’Brien
If we behaved ourselves and got our work done, our teacher would often read exciting adventure stories to us.
This one was a favorite. Written way back in 1971, it tells the story of a widowed mouse and some clever rates.
Here is the book description:
Mrs. Frisby, a widowed mouse with four small children, is faced with a terrible problem. She must move her family to their summer quarters immediately, or face almost certain death. But her youngest son, Timothy, lies ill with pneumonia and must not be moved. Fortunately, she encounters the rats of NIMH, an extraordinary breed of highly intelligent creatures, who come up with a brilliant solution to her dilemma. And Mrs. Frisby in turn renders them a great service.
Best for children eight years and up, if your kids like to read, definitely put this one in their to-be-read pile.
