On a cold February evening back in 2010, I sat down at my computer after a long day at work and decided to try my hand at writing a romance novel.
I had no idea what I was doing.
None at all.
But I was determined to try.
I’d always dreamed of writing a book, but it was one of those things I wasn’t sure I’d ever get around to. In January of that year, I picked up a book on an after-Christmas sale (from one of the big publishing houses) that was so incredibly awful, I decided after reading it I had to give writing a novel a try.
Writing wasn’t new to me. I’d spent almost ten years as a newspaper journalist and a handful of years after that doing freelance articles for regional publications. However, what I’d written in the past couldn’t compare to the euphoric state I experienced writing my first sweet romance.
Heart of Clay is the book I sat down and wrote six years ago. It will always hold a special place in my heart because it was my first book and it’s also a very personal book for me.
As I mentioned, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I think I was about four or five chapters into the book when I hit a huge wall. Rather than give up, I jumped ahead and wrote a few chapters that eventually wound up closer to the end. I did that back and forth thing until I got back into the groove and could finish the book.
At one point, I’d written this whole wonderfully romantic scene about Clay making Callan a special candlelight dinner with lasagna… and it disappeared. To this day, I have no idea how it wasn’t saved in the file and for the life of me, I couldn’t recreate it no matter how hard I tried. It truly is a lost scene.
Anyway, I’m so, so happy I listened to that little voice urging me to give writing romances a try. And I am so unbelievably blessed to get up every day and do something I love so much.
