Autumn’s arrival means fresh apples galore in our area.
If you enjoy the taste of cider, here is a simple recipe for making it in your slow cooker!
INGREDIENTS
4 large tart apples (like Granny Smith)
4 large sweet apples (like Gala)
6 whole cloves
5 cinnamon sticks
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
DIRECTIONS
Wash and dry the apples. Cut each apple into 8 wedges (you can leave on the skins). Transfer to a 6-7-quart slow cooker. Add the cloves, cinnamon sticks and 8 cups water. Cook on high, covered, for 4 hours.
Remove the lid and smash the apples with a potato masher. Return lid and cook another two hours.
Place a large fine-mesh strainer over a large stockpot. Ladle the apple mixture into the strainer. With the back of the ladle, press down on the pulp to extract the liquid. Discard pulp. Stir in the sugar until completed dissolved. If desired, add more sugar or cinnamon.
Serve hot, or allow to cool completely and serve over ice.

Thanks, Alice. There’s just something about that scent that says “welcome autumn!”
