Growing up on a farm with a brother who is a certified no-doubt-about it cowboy, I have a lot of experience and observations I can draw from when I’m writing about cowboys and ranch life. While my dad primarily farmed, we also raised beef cattle and I can’t think of a time in my entire growing up years that we didn’t have a horse to ride.
Rodeos, cowboy boots and horses were just part of life.
Living off the farm for almost 20 years, I sometimes find myself looking up information I know, just to verify my memory serves me correctly.
I also find myself looking up information on trends, even fashion, just to stay on top of things so when I’m writing what my characters are wearing, saying or doing is in-line with what is current and realistic.
This can be a lot of fun.
It can also be quite challenging, especially when I find things that make me drool in longing.
Like these boots. They make me drool much.
I don’t know who, what, where, or when, but one of my characters is going to be wearing these. They are just too awesome not to work them into a story at some point.
