Bobbins and Boots

Baker City Brides, Book 4

Bobbins and Boots cover.jpg

How does an act of kindness result in… marriage?

One carefree cowboy is about to find out in this sweet historical romance!

Born dirt-poor into a life of hardship, Allie Tillman seizes the opportunity to better her situation by answering an advertisement for a mail-order bride in the West. Upon her arrival in Baker City, Oregon, she discovers her intended is a low-down, lying thief. Determined not to marry him, she grasps at the one thing that will keep him from forcing her to be his wife — marrying another man.

Good-natured cowboy Ben Amick had no idea a simple trip into town would completely change his life. When he happens upon a mail-order bride desperate to avoid marrying her fiancé, Ben does the first thing that pops into his head and weds her. Willingly, he gives her the protection of his name and his arms, never expecting her to capture his heart.

Humorous, heartfelt, and awash in sweet romance, Bobbins and Boots captures the tender and tumultuous emotions of falling in love.

Meet Ben and Allie

Excerpt:

“You love me?” Tears pooled in her eyes and her lower lip quivered. She couldn’t believe this handsome, wonderful, gentle, teasing cowboy loved her. “You really love me? But, Ben, I’m nobody. I’m just…”

“The girl I love and can’t live without.” Ben stood and pulled her to her feet before wrapping his arms around her. “I love you, Alaina Maelee Amick.” He kissed one cheek then the other. “I love your freckles.” He kissed the tip of her nose. “I love the sound of your laughter.” He kissed her forehead. “I love your cute little lopsided smile.” He kissed the left corner of her mouth. “And I love your silky hair.” He pulled out the pins holding it in a bun and watched it tumble down her back and over her shoulders.

Allie sighed contentedly when Ben buried his hands in her long tresses and inhaled a deep breath, basking in her honeysuckle scent.

When he leaned back, his eyes were full of love and longing. “I love everything about you, Allie. But I also love you with all my heart.”

Just one week until Bobbins and Boots releases!

I’m so excited!

For fun, I thought you might enjoy a little peek into the book with a fun excerpt:

***

None too soon, they rode down the trail that brought them to the ranch yard. Jack waved to his parents as they sat on their porch together while Lily played in the yard with Rigsly.

“Did you have fun this afternoon?” Jemma asked as Jack jumped off Nick and tied him to the fence.

“Boy, did I!” Jack opened the gate and ran into the yard.

“What on earth happened to Allie?” Jemma asked. She and Thane rose and stared at her sodden, disheveled state as she and Ben approached.

“You should have seen Ben, Mama.” Jack grinned as he raced up the porch steps and grabbed his mother’s hand in his. “He ripped off her clothes and started in thumping on her then he tossed her in the river. She didn’t even know how to swim, but it was sure something to see.”

“I bet it was,” Thane mumbled under his breath. His wife’s elbow connected with his side, making him grunt.

“Benjamin Amick! What possessed you to do such a thing to your wife?” Jemma fisted her hands on her hips and glared at the young cowboy.

Ben glanced at Allie. Her face was nearly as red as the basket of apples sitting on the porch. “My wife wasn’t watching where she stood and ended up with a mess of ants in her pants.” He shot her a devilish smile. “Or I guess I should say bloomers. However, she still hasn’t agreed to let me check to make sure all them lil’ critters are gone.”

Thimbles-and-Thistles-Promo-3

I am incredibly pleased and excited to share the news that you can now listen to Thimbles and Thistles on Audible or Amazon!

John Martin Byrne did a wonderful job bringing the characters to life as the narrator – including an incredible Scottish burr for Ian MacGregor!

Here is a little sample:

Thimbles and Thistles

Thimbles and Thistles CoverStubborn, mule-headed, independent woman!

She’d take that as a compliment…

Maggie Dalton has no need for a man in her life. Widowed more than ten years, she’s built a successful business and managed quite well on her own in the bustling town of Baker City, Oregon. Aggravated by her inability to block thoughts of the handsome lumber mill owner from her mind, she renews her determination to resist his attempts at friendship.

Full of Scottish charm and mischief, Ian MacGregor could claim any available woman in Baker City as his own, except the enchanting dress shop owner who continues to ignore him. Not one to give up on what he wants, Ian vows to win Maggie’s heart or leave the town he’s come to love.

You can also find the book for Kindle or in paperback form on Amazon.

Here is a little excerpt:

“Tully suggested the best way to keep Joe from marrying Miss Tillman was for her to already be married, so I did.”

Thane rocked back so hard, he had to scramble to keep from tipping off the chunk of wood. “You did what?”

“I married Miss Tillman. It all happened so fast, I wasn’t exactly sure what I’d done until I was partway home. I went to the bank, took money from my account, and left it at the jail for Tully to give Joe. I figured him punching me in the stomach and threatening to shoot me was worth five dollars. Then I got Pastor Eagan and we went to the boardinghouse. He married us. I remember signing a marriage certificate and Hattie and Edwin witnessing the ceremony, but everything else is kind of a blur.”

Thane jumped up and looked around. “Where’s your wife, Ben? What did you do with her?”

As though he finally regained his full mental faculties, Ben stood while a look of panic settled on his face. “I left her at the boardinghouse. I didn’t even think about bringing her home with me.” Ben groaned and sank back down on the stump. “I stepped in it good this time, Thane. What am I gonna do with a wife? I’m too young to be married. I don’t even have a house. I’m no better than Joe Lambery.”

Thane jerked him to his feet and shook a finger in his face. “I don’t want to ever hear you say anything like that again, Benjamin Ross Amick. You’re a good man and you’ll make a fine husband, once you get your head set back on straight. It’s too late to go back to town tonight, but first thing in the morning, you’re going to Baker City and bringing home your bride.”

“But, Thane, what am I gonna do with her? She can’t sleep in the bunkhouse, for gosh sakes.” Ben slapped his hat against his leg. “What was I thinking?”

“That there was someone who needed your help. I’ve never known you to walk away from trouble, Ben, and I’m sure this seemed like the best way to handle the situation at the time.” Thane pointed to the cabin across the ranch yard. “You and Allie can live in the cabin. It probably needs a good cleaning but you’d be welcome to use it.”

“Allie?” Ben gave Thane a confused look. Was that the name of the woman he’d married? The details remained rather unclear.

Thane offered him a pointed look. “Your wife’s name is Allie. You certainly can’t go around calling her Miss Tillman now that she’s Mrs. Amick.”

Ben looked as though he might be sick. Thane chuckled and thumped him on the back. “Come on. Eat supper with us. I don’t think you’re up to the teasing all the men will offer when they find out you’ve wed and forgot to bring home your bride.”

I thought you all might enjoy a little snippet from Taste of Tara today!

Excerpt:

taste-of-tara-coverIf Bradley Cooper had a doppelganger with sun streaked blond hair, this guy had to be him. The day she’d noticed him riding one of the horses at Magnolia Rose, she’d hesitated for a moment to admire his muscular form, engaging smile, and blue eyes that could stop even the most stalwart prude in her tracks.

Unfortunately, she’d only seen him across the backyard and no one had introduced them. The possibility existed it wasn’t even the same guy. The one at the plantation always wore a black cowboy hat. This man’s blond hair gleamed in the sunlight. Odds existed there could be two Bradley Cooper doubles running around Atlanta, but she doubted it.

Rushing toward the gorgeous guy, he gave her a strange glance then looked behind her. His gaze narrowed and he reached out a hand to her. “Did you wander off again, honey? You could get into trouble doing that, you know. It’s time for us to get back, anyway.”

Grateful for his assistance and the little fib he spouted to ward off the approaching men, Tara reached out and clasped his hand in hers. She cast a quick glimpse over her shoulder. Two burly ruffians turned around and headed back in the direction she’d come from. She would never, ever go off alone like that again.

A cackle from the figure in the wheelchair drew Tara’s attention. Tufts of white hair stuck up all over his head like randomly affixed hunks of cotton candy. The old man fixed his faded eyes on Tara before he smirked at the young man. “You got something you need to tell me, son?”

February 1942 was a dark time for Americans. Ten weeks earlier, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, pulling the United States into a war they’d tried hard to avoid.
rooseveltOn February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066,  authorizing the removal of any or all people from military areas “as deemed necessary or desirable.” The military in turn defined the entire West Coast, home to the majority of Americans of Japanese ancestry or citizenship, as a military area. (If you’d like to read the document for yourself, you can find it here.)
More than 120,000 men, women, and children of Japanese descent were detained in fifteen assembly centers in the spring of 1942, including the Portland Assembly Center.
Many of these people were born in America, some second or third generation Americans, but their place of birth became irrelevant in the coming days. Those living in the evacuation areas were forced to leave behind their homes, sell their possessions for mere pennies on the dollar, and abandon their businesses to report to assembly centers — or become fugitives in the land they called home.
My recently released sweet historical romance, Garden of Her Heart, details one woman’s plight as she has to choose between doing what she is ordered or what she knows to be right.

Can forbidden love blossom amid the constraints of war?

The moment the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, life shifted for Miko Nishimura. Desperate to reach the Portland Assembly Center for Japanese-Americans, she’s kicked off the bus miles from town. Every tick of the clock pushes her closer to becoming a fugitive in the land of her birth. Exhausted, she stumbles to her grandparents’ abandoned farm only to find a dying soldier sprawled across the step. Unable to leave him, she forsakes all else to keep him alive.

After crashing his plane in the Battle of the Atlantic, the doctors condemn Captain Rock Laroux to die. Determined to meet his maker beneath a blue sky at his family home, he sneaks out of the hospital. Weary and half out of his mind, he makes it as far as a produce stand he remembers from his youth. Rather than surrender to death, Rock fights a battle of the heart as he falls in love with the beautiful Japanese woman who saves his life.

A poignant, sweet romance, Garden of Her Heart proves love can bloom in unlikely places even under the most challenging circumstances.

Excerpt:

“Please, Miko? Would you at least consider marrying me?”

She shook her head and tried to pull away from him, but he drew her closer, wrapping his arms around her and holding her. His breath tantalized her ear as he bent his head near hers. “Please?”

“I can’t, Rock. I don’t want to be the cause of you missing out on the love of a lifetime.” She turned her head to the side and pressed it against his neck. Unintentionally, she heightened the yearning that already pulsed between them. Forcibly, he relaxed his hold on her.

“Miko,” he whispered. “Look at me, sweetheart.”

Unhurried, she tipped her head back, drawn into the bright warmth of his eyes.

“Miko, if I didn’t want to marry you, I wouldn’t offer. I rather like the idea of spending my future with you. We have more going for us than many couples who wed. There is no doubt in my mind at all about your ability to be a good wife. Me, on the other hand…” His cocky grin brought an amused light to her eyes. “It might be challenging to be married to someone like me.”

A smile curved her mouth upward and Rock tamped down the desire to kiss her again, even with the pastor watching their every move.

The Magnolias and Moonshine series was created specifically for the RT Booklover’s Convention and has ten sweet and ten sizzle contemporary novellas, all set in Atlanta. The stories include cowboys, weddings, county fairs, reunited love stories, and much more. Step into the world of the South and hear the cicadas, taste the mint juleps, see the stars, and smell the magnolias.

My contribution to the series is Taste of Tara.
For a while, I’ve been toying with the idea of a heroine who grew up in the Northwest but wants, more than almost anything, to spend time in the South.  When I was asked to participate in this series, it seemed the perfect time to bring the story to life.
