Love’s Compass Series: New Release and a Free Book!

Unforgettable Series - Melanie D

When she published Finding Peace, the first book in the Love’s Compass series, in 2015, Melanie D. Snitker had no idea just how many people it would reach. With each new book in the series, the characters continued to draw readers in as couples fell in love, families grew, and faith persevered.

Now the sixth and final chapter, Finding Grace, is available.

Finding-Grace

Single dad Tyler Martin can’t be more grateful to the woman who finds his missing daughter. Even though he feels a spark between them, falling in love is a risk he shouldn’t take. Too bad chance encounters and his stubborn heart keep trying to convince him otherwise.

After escaping a nightmarish relationship, Beth Davenport is content with her safe and blessedly normal life. Yet something about Tyler and his adorable daughter makes her wish for more. With the walls around her heart finally starting to crumble, she’s afraid of a future she can’t predict.

When Tuck is assigned to a puzzling burglary involving Laurie’s fledgling photography business, he goes into it with his usual perseverance. He wants to help her – if she’ll let him. As the case unfolds and the mystery deepens, another question arises.

Saving Mistletoe 1.jpg

Saving Mistletoe was such a fun story to write. An attorney who could use a little Ebeneezer intervention, a cowboy cop with a stubborn streak a mile wide, and a child in desperate need of a Christmas miracle.

We first met Ellen Meade in Taste of Tara. She and Tara have been best friends forever. In that story, we knew Ellen was an attorney with a bright future ahead of her. But we didn’t really know what Ellen looked like.

Ellen (Zoey Deutch)

The beautiful Zoey Deutch is just so, so perfect for Ellen.

ellen 2

Absolutely perfect for Ellen who is truly a sweet, giving person (and so lovely!).

Our hero in the story is Burke Tipton, a cowboy police officer who works with the Mounted Police Unit in downtown Portland, Oregon.  I knew I wanted Burke to have dark hair, but beyond that, I was open to ideas.

Then I saw a photo of Lucas Black.

burke 2

And I knew I’d found my Burke! He’s just ideal for the somewhat cynical (yet softhearted) cop who can also be mighty stubborn.

Burke (Lucas Black)

But he is such a cutie! And so perfect for Ellen!

Mistletoe girl

In the story, Burke ends up with a homeless little girl named Mistletoe on his hands. This sweetie-pie was just how I envisioned the “star of the show.”

Mistletoe girl 2

And this face… made me smile every time I looked at it!

Sugar Bear

Burke’s partner in the story is a horse named Sugar Bear. Bear is part of the police force and adds a fun element to the book.

Lovey

As does Lovey the dog! (She is so gorgeous!)

You can find more of my visual inspiration for the story on Pinterest.

And while you browse through the photos, listen to Chris Young croon Under the Weather. It’s the song I listened to while I wrote this story.

Saving Mistletoe - Shanna Hatfield

Will love be enough to bring

A miracle for Christmas?

Hotshot attorney Ellen Meade seems to have it all: a powerful position with her firm, a posh downtown apartment, and a bright future ahead of her. But for Ellen, the future grows dimmer with each passing day. Her apartment is lonely without her best friend, and the demands of her job are slowly killing her soul. She’s simply surviving until she bumps into a police officer who changes everything.

Burke Tipton loves his job as a Mounted Patrol Officer in downtown Portland.  The life he’s built away from his family’s ranch is simple and uncomplicated. At least it was until a beautiful woman bumps into him and turns his world upside down.

Add in Burke’s partner Sugar Bear, Lovey the dog, and a child named Mistletoe in need of a Christmas miracle, and you get a heartwarming, holiday romance from USA Today Bestselling Author Shanna Hatfield.

Available now on Amazon.

Excerpt:

Slowly opening her eyes, she glanced up at the scowling, tanned face of a police officer as he sat astride his large chestnut mount. The horse shook his mane and glanced back at her, as though he measured her worth and found her severely lacking.

She pushed against the man’s muscled thigh to regain her balance and took a step back. The contact with his leg left her further unsettled than she’d been mere seconds before.

Who had muscles like that, anyway? His thigh felt like it was made of steel. What was the guy, a fitness nut? The short sleeves of his uniform shirt only accented his biceps and broad shoulders.

A brief perusal that started at the top of his hat and ended at the toes of his shiny leather riding boots confirmed that the man was, indeed, in prime physical shape.

His gaze held a hint of scorn as he continued to stare at her with a disapproving frown.

“May I help you, miss?” he asked in a smooth voice that held the hint of a drawl. He didn’t sound Southern, exactly, but he wasn’t from Portland, that was for sure. The man had a rugged, outdoorsy look to him. His seat on the back of the tall horse only accentuated the persona.

“No, thank you,” she said. Another step back nearly carried her into two businessmen walking past her. One of them gave her a cool glare while the other shot her an interested glance.

“Are you sure, miss? You seem to be a little lost.” The officer’s expression didn’t soften as he held her gaze with eyes that were a surprisingly clear shade of blue. In spite of his gruffness, Ellen couldn’t help but notice the sculpted firmness of his lips, particularly the top one.

Unbidden, thoughts of kissing it flew into her head…

While I was writing The Dove, I truly had such fun browsing through images that helped shape the story.

I studied many images of blacksmithing tools.

And blacksmith shops.

arbor

And awesome, artsy things a blacksmith might create. (I so want this!)

rope dancer

I also looked at photos of circus performers, especially those who perform on silk ropes.

gypsy

And gypsies of the 1800s. There are some really fascinating images.

And, of course, turtle doves!

I thought it would be fun to share my inspiration for the characters of The Dove today.

This was such a fun project and Author Kit Morgan set the bar high with The Partridge, the first book in the series.

All I knew when I started developing Culver Daniels’ character was that he was tall and broad shouldered. I thought it would be fun if he had a cleft in his chin.

With that in mind, I went searching for someone who could provide my visual inspiration for our brawny blacksmith.

mv5bmtayntm1nja3njfeqtjeqwpwz15bbwu3mdy5mdu3ntg-_v1_

Jarid Faubel is exactly how I picture Culver. That strong jawline, the little dimple in his chin, the broad shoulders… and those eyes!

culver

Hello, handsome frontier man.

It’s no wonder Kezia Mirga took one look at her intended and fell in love.

zee 1

The lovely Vanessa Hudgen provided awesome inspiration for the free-spirit gypsy Kezia.

From the long dark hair and her amazing facial features…

zee 2

to the way she crinkles her nose when she smiles is just perfect!

Kezia is a widow with a very special treasure – her baby, Jemimiah (and that name means dove!)

baby Jem

The moment I happened upon this image, I knew I’d found baby Jem. Isn’t she just the most adorable little thing. I love those curls and those big, beautiful eyes!

If you haven’t yet read Cort and Kaley’s story, I think you’ll really enjoy it.

Wrestlin Christmas 17

Sidelined with a major injury, steer wrestler Cort McGraw struggles to come to terms with the end of his career. Shanghaied by his sister and best friend, he finds himself on a run-down ranch with a worrisome, albeit gorgeous widow, and her silent, solemn son.

Five minutes after Cort McGraw lands on her doorstep, K.C. Peters fights to keep a promise she made to herself to stay away from single, eligible men. When her neighbor said he knew just the person to help work her ranch for the winter, she never expected the handsome, brawny former rodeo star to fill the position.

Ready to send him packing, her little boy has other plans…

Meet Cort McGraw and Kaley Peters

Excerpt:

Tate Morgan called the previous afternoon and said he knew someone experienced willing to work for what she could pay. Unable to believe her good fortune, she expected a grizzled old ranch hand in his retirement years, not a good-looking giant of a man in his prime.

Tall and brawny, Cort McGraw happened to be one of the most handsome men she’d ever seen. From his silvery-gray eyes rimmed with black eyelashes to the dimple in his all-too-attractive chin, she wished Kenzie had given her some warning. If she’d known what he looked like, that he was so young, rugged, and hunky, she would have told Tate not to bother sending Cort to her place.

Mercy, he smelled good, too. Even now, his manly, musky fragrance filled her senses. Annoyed with herself for savoring his heady scent, she brushed at her nose, hoping to chase away the lingering aroma of his aftershave.

Christmas Confection 1

Today, I want to introduce you to the characters in The Christmas Confection.

When I wrote The Christmas Calamity (Book 3 in the Hardman Holidays series), we had the opportunity to meet Fred Decker. At that time, he was an angry, troubled, rather belligerent teen with a mother no one in town liked. During that story, I’m sure no one could have viewed Fred as potential hero material.

But then Fred made a life-altering decision to change.

Evidence of that change is seen in The Christmas Quandary (book 5). He’s become friends with Tom Grove once again and is working hard to provide he’s different from the rebellious, furious teen he’d once been.

I’ll admit, I had only a vague idea of what Fred looked like when I started mulling around ideas for this story.

Then I ended up redesigning all the covers in the series and decided to go ahead and make the cover for The Christmas Confection while I was at it.

Suddenly, I had a much clearer idea of Fred’s character.

Brady Corbet

Brady Corbet just happened to do a splendid job of fulfilling my ideas for Fred.

(Those eyes! Oh, my gracious, those blue eyes!)

Fred 4

I can understand why the girls in Hardman might cast Fred a second or third glance.

Fred 5

I could so easily picture this as Fred. The rather subdued, brooding look. Fred is, after all, convinced he’s not worthy —of love, respect, or just about anything good — because of his parents.

The flawed way he views himself is why Fred needs a girl who sees his actually flaws and loves him anyway.

Elsa 4

Beautiful Isabel Durant is exactly how I envision Elsa Lindstrom, Hardman’s lovely baker.

Isabel Durant

Her midnight blue eyes and golden hair are two things Fred immediately notices about Elsa, along with her smile.

I didn’t have any particular visual for Elsa’s brother, or the outlaws, but I did find a visual I loved for Fred’s three aunts that make me think of the three fairies in Sleeping Beauty.

Fred's aunts

Isn’t this such a fun photo! I have no idea what these three lovely young women are doing, but they appear to be having a great time at it. I could so easy see them in the story as Ari, Bett, and Claire.
sleigh

Oh, and I can’t forget their sleigh! Isn’t it awesome! How I’d love to go for a ride! 🙂

The Christmas Confection, Hardman Holidays Book 6, available now on Amazon.

And here is the song I listed to while I wrote the story. Love Working on You from John Michael Montgomery seemed particularly fitting for Fred.
